Raised in the St. Bernard projects of New Orleans, Ricky B is considered a pioneer of New Orleans bounce, a local indigenous rap subgenre. Incorporating Mardi Gras Indian chants into his early records, Ricky is considered widely influential across multiple demographics, including rap, hip-hop, brass band, funk and more. Ricky B has multi-generational appeal, as the songs he wrote in the 1990s are still regularly played by DJs throughout Louisiana. Ricky B is also a cultural historian advocating New Orleans music and culture.
After years of penning music, he explored his writing skills as an author with the same mindset and approach to writing music. With a perspective of life as it’s known by some, unknown by others, but is believed to be the reality of most, he challenged himself to write and create a bestseller just as he did when he penned his first hit record Shake For Ya Hood, a New Orleans Classic.
Ricky received his graduate degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University, graduating magna cum laude. He became an HSE Professional who still writes and releases music and has established the RickyB 4 LYFE (Lifting Youth and Family Empowerment) non-profit organization, which aims to keep relationships between families and the incarcerated intact by providing means of transportation and lodging for frequent visits to prisons to spend time with loved ones. He writes often and has already completed his next book, Shake For Ya Hood, with the subtitle “It All Started Out Growing Up In The Project.”
